Magazine Typography

Mood board showing a range of masthead from various magazines

From the examples used we can see that red, black and white are the conventional colours used. Red is deemed as a strong and powerful colour. It easily captures the attention of its audience. Black is the Strongest of all neutral colours and is used to highlight. As an example in the 'TIME' masthead it is used to highlight the red within. It brings our attention to the words presented. White is often presented as a pure colour. Though it is on the other side of he spectrum to black they compliment each other well. Both black and white are seen as more professional colours, therefore the more professional magazines such as ELLE and VOGUE will use only white and black. White and black highlight the red used within the logos which makes them pop and drags our attention to the cover of the magazine. Similarly to the reasoning behind the use of only black and white, the more professional magazines will use serif. This is to put emphasis on the letters. Serif is an older style of writing and is used mostly in books. Whereas sans is a more modern form of text and is used more on the web.

Introduction -Brief

A wordle presenting some of the key terminology I will use throughout this project
My Brief is to complete a Front cover, Contents Page and Double page spread of a music magazine. I will pick a music genre before exploring the different conventions to that genre. This will allow me to begin to understand what my magazine should hold and look like. On this blog I will post the activities of the magazine from the research to the the final piece, this blog will show a record of all the work I have completed to make the magazine.

I enjoy and appreciate all kinds of music and as my favorite artist is Lana Del Rey I love a variety of pop culture. Lana Del Rey sings  a lot of pop music but from the 1960's and 1970's. She brings a sense of American identity to her songs and allows us to travel to pop in the past. Most of her songs are about heart break and love therefore bringing rich and heartfelt passion to each one. She has a way of connecting with her fans through music and I would like to capture this feature in my magazine.

My research into different magazines has allowed me to see what will work well in the magazine and what will not, e.g. colours, fonts, layouts, images... I will use this research to create a magazine that I feel will be both visually appealing whilst having the conventions of a professional magazine.

The main concern I would have at this point would be meeting deadlines, however I know that if I plan my time effectively I will be able to complete all tasks in the time given.
